“You get out of it what you put into it.” - Gabby Thomas
Does your inner voice help you or hurt you?
We all have an inner voice that doesn’t turn off. That inner voice, our thoughts, become create feelings, and feelings drive behavior.
Gabby Thomas is an Olympic track champion specializing in 100- and 200-meter sprints. In an interview, she was asked about the process of preparing for her biggest races, and she talked about how important it is for her to manage her inner voice.
Gabby said, “I am building my self-talk and building my confidence in that moment. I am telling myself that I am already the Olympic champion. I wrote down over and over every morning that I was in Paris that I would be the Olympic champion in my notes app, over and over, and I envisioned the race, all day, every day, imagining myself winning and crossing the line in front.”
Gabby then said, “Part of it is tricking myself and really believing that I’m capable and that I’m going to do this. I was definitely nervous, but half the battle is mental.”
The greatest battle we fight is the battle in our minds. Our minds never shut off, and our inner voice either helps us or hurts us.
You can manage your mind so that it becomes a weapon for you, not against you by managing what you say to yourself.
Learning how to manage your inner voice might be the most important part of your training and success.
