Week 2 - You Are Worthy

God created man in his own image. And God blessed them. And behold, it was very good. Genesis 1

When I was a young athlete, when I played good felt good. I felt good about myself and my ability, and I felt validation from the people around me telling me how good I was.

When I played badly, I felt bad. I felt bad about myself and my ability, and I felt bad because of the lack of positive attention I received from others.

I allowed the opinions of others to affect how I felt about myself.

I played college basketball for a school that loved basketball. The stands would be packed, and everybody knew who we were on campus. We started off my first season strong, and I couldn’t walk through the student center or hallways, or cafeteria without being stopped; it was a great feeling, and it made us feel like we were special.

But I remember a tough stretch in the middle of the season in which I experienced the opposite. We lost two games in a row, and no one stopped us between classes.

I specifically remember one classmate see me during this rough stretch and cover his face, showing he wanted me to know he didn’t want to see me. It was embarrassing and infuriating, but it taught me a valuable lesson: don't seek validation from people because the second you can't do for them what they want, you run the risk of losing them.

So where do we seek validation? As a follower of Jesus, we can seek validation and worth from Him and God.

Last week, I wrote about the first five days of creation during which God created the heavens and earth, the land and the plants, the stars and the sun, night and day, and the fish and the birds, and God said that it was good.

And then on the 6th day, God created land animals and then man. God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Then, God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

God created us to be and look like Him. He gave us dominion - sovereignty or control - over the earth and everything in it.

When God was finished and saw everything he had made, the Bible says it was very good.

We are worthy because we were made in the image of God, and when God was finished making us, He blessed us and said that we were very good. We have the blessing of God, so we don’t need the blessing of others.

In a world that validates the biggest, strongest, fastest, smartest, and prettiest, know that your value and your worth are not in this world, but from God. We were all carefully, fearfully, and wonderfully made in God’s image (Psalm 139:14). There is nowhere that we can go to escape his presence. He is always with us.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1 - Think about a time when you felt fully validated, appreciated, and worthy. How well did that make you feel inside? Wouldn’t it be nice to live every day knowing that you are worthy, appreciated, and valued? You are because God made you and said that you are very good.

2 - Have you ever been in a situation where people made you feel like you weren't worthy, appreciated, or valued? How did that make you feel?

3 - Have you ever been in a situation where you saw people make someone else feel like they weren't worthy, appreciated, or valued? How do you think that made them feel?

4 - What advice would you give someone who was made to feel like they weren't valued or appreciated?

5 - What advice would you give someone who witnessed someone being treated in a way that made them feel like they weren't valued or appreciated?

God, I pray that I never forget that your presence is always with me, that I am carefully, fearfully, and wonderfully made by you, and that when you created me, you blessed me and said that I am very good. I pray that I can help others feel like they are valued, appreciated, and worthy. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
